Many negative things can happen in both our personal and professional lives. However if you are interviewing but have not prepared for questions about events that have challenged you, you may find yourself erring towards the negative rather than the positive.  Turning negative statements into positive ones during a job interview can showcase your resilience, problem-solving skills, and ability to focus on solutions. Thus, practice is key!

Here are eight ways to effectively reframe negative statements:

Negative Statement: “I don’t have experience with [specific skill or tool].”

  • Positive Reframe: “While I do not have much direct experience with [specific skill or tool], I am excited to learn and have successfully picked up new technologies quickly in the past [identify something you learned on your own]. I am confident in my ability to adapt and excel in this area.

Negative Statement: “I struggled with time management in my previous role.”

  • Positive Reframe: “In my previous role, I faced challenges with time management, but I implemented strategies such as prioritizing tasks, utilizing time-tracking tools, and setting achievable goals. As a result, I significantly improved my efficiency and productivity and continue to fine-tune my time management skills.” Be prepared to identify the time-tracking tools you use, or how you set goals and stay on track

Negative Statement: “I made a mistake in [specific project or task].”

  • Positive Reframe: “While working on [specific project or task], I encountered a challenge, but I proactively addressed it by seeking guidance from my team members, analyzing the situation, and implementing corrective actions. This experience taught me valuable lessons and strengthened my problem-solving abilities.” Be prepared to speak specifically about the corrective actions you took.

Negative Statement: “I did not get along with a coworker in my previous job.”

  • Positive Reframe: “While working in a diverse team environment, I encountered various communication styles and personalities. Although I faced some differences in viewpoints with a coworker, I remained professional, maintained open communication, and focused on collaborating effectively to achieve our common goals.” Speak about how this experience has taught you about adapting to new environments with new colleagues.

Negative Statement: “I was overlooked for a promotion in my previous role.”

  • Positive Reframe: “Although I was not selected for a promotion in my previous role, I used the opportunity to reassess my career goals, seek feedback from my supervisors, and identify areas for growth and development. This experience motivated me to pursue new challenges and opportunities for advancement.” Just a note: if you are ready to search for your new job, download the FrogHire.ai extension to efficiently track your job search process while easily searching across all five popular job sites.

Negative Statement: “I had difficulty adapting to changes in company policies.”

  • Positive Reframe: “When faced with changes in company policies, I initially found it challenging to adapt [share a reason, if appropriate]. However, I proactively sought clarification, engaged in training sessions, and leveraged resources to understand the rationale behind the changes. Ultimately, I embraced the changes and contributed to their successful implementation.” If you are speaking about resources leveraged, be prepared to identify those if you are pushed during the interview.

Negative Statement: “I struggled to meet deadlines on occasion.”

  • Positive Reframe: “While managing multiple projects, I occasionally encountered tight deadlines. To overcome this challenge, I refined my time-management techniques, communicated effectively with stakeholders to set realistic expectations, and delegated tasks when necessary. As a result, I consistently met or exceeded project deadlines.”

Negative Statement: “I lack experience in leadership roles.”

  • Positive Reframe: “While I have not held formal leadership positions, my ability to motivate and mentor team members, take initiative on projects, and collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams demonstrate my readiness to be assigned a leadership role. I am eager to further develop my leadership skills in a role which will allow me to not only collaborate with teammates, but pave the way for innovation.”
