Most job interviews will include questions about your strengths and weaknesses. When discussing strengths and weaknesses in an interview, it is important to provide relevant examples and demonstrate self-awareness. If you are asked this question, I always prefer to start off with my weakness (only listing one or two) and then finishing off with my strengths—thus finishing on a “high note”.

Here are five strengths and weaknesses you may want to consider, along with explanations; make sure you tweak the answer according to your actual strengths and weaknesses, along with how they may support your future career at the job you are applying for!

Weaknesses:

  • Public speaking: Acknowledge a specific area where you struggle, such as public speaking, and discuss steps you are taking to improve. It is important to talk about how you are working on improving, since this shows you are proactive in addressing weaknesses. You could mention that you’re actively seeking opportunities to practice public speaking or attending workshops to enhance your communication skills.
  • Time management: Admit that managing time effectively is an area you continue to work on, if you struggle with it. Discuss strategies you are implementing to better prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, such as using productivity tools or creating daily schedules—make sure you are specific in how you are doing this should they ask follow up questions. Highlight your commitment to improving in this area and your willingness to seek guidance or support as needed.
  • Delegating tasks: Perhaps sometimes you struggle with delegating tasks effectively, as you prefer to ensure things are done to your standards. However, emphasize that you recognize the importance of delegation in fostering teamwork and increasing efficiency and discuss steps you are taking to delegate more efficiently, such as identifying team members’ strengths and providing clear instructions.
  • Taking on too much responsibility: Admit that at times you have a tendency to take on too much responsibility, which can lead to burnout or decreased productivity. Discuss how you are learning to set boundaries, prioritize tasks, and delegate effectively to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Highlight your commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance and seeking support from colleagues or supervisors when needed.
  • Technical skills: If relevant, acknowledge that you may lack expertise in certain technical areas. However, emphasize your eagerness to learn and your ability to quickly acquire new skills, perhaps highlighting a technical skill you have learned independently in the past. Mention specific courses you are planning to take or resources you are utilizing to improve your technical proficiency.

For example, you could discuss a time when you successfully navigated through a major work change or quickly learned a new skill to meet a project deadline.
  • Problem-solving skills: Emphasize your ability to analyze complex situations, identify key issues, and develop effective solutions. Share an example where you encountered a challenging problem at work or in a team project and how you successfully resolved it, showcasing your critical thinking abilities.
  • Teamwork: Illustrate your ability to collaborate effectively with others and contribute to a positive team dynamic by describing a project or initiative where you worked closely with team members to achieve a common goal, highlighting your communication skills, flexibility, and willingness to support others.
  • Leadership: If applicable, discuss instances where you took initiative, motivated others, or assumed leadership roles. Whether it is leading a team project, mentoring new employees, or organizing events, provide examples that demonstrate your leadership capabilities and ability to inspire and guide others.
  • Attention to detail: Mention your strong attention to detail and focus on producing high-quality work.Share a specific project or task where your attention to detail made a significant impact on the outcome, such as identifying errors or improving processes.
