You find six people from your university at the company. One graduated twenty years ago and works in finance. Another joined the same product team last year. A third is a recruiter in a different country.
They are all alumni. They are not equally relevant to your job search.
A better question is: “Who shares enough context to answer something specific about this role or company?”
Use the LinkedIn Alumni tab
LinkedIn’s Alumni tab on a school Page lets you identify alumni in a field and reach out about industry experience, career opportunities, or mentoring.
Open your school’s LinkedIn Page and select Alumni. Search for the target company or relevant field.
LinkedIn notes that filtering alumni by year is no longer available in the current Alumni tab. Do not rely on older guides that require that control.
You can also use LinkedIn people search. Its current filters include company, location, school, industry, connections, and keywords.
Try:
[school] [company] product manager[school] [company] data science[school] [company] recruiter
Then confirm the school and current employer on each profile.
Choose alumni connected to the work
Rank possible contacts by relevance:
- Same company and similar team
- Same company and related role
- Same company and shared major or program
- Same company but distant function
- Former employee with recent team experience
The best contact is not always the most senior alumnus. Someone two years into the role may remember the application process and answer practical questions. A senior executive may have no connection to the opening.
Check:
- Current title
- Team or function
- Location
- Time at the company
- Shared school, major, or program
- Overlap with the job’s required skills
Start with company evidence
FrogHire.ai JobInsights can surface available school, major, and program signals for a company. Company Insights lets you examine that background in more detail.
Use those signals to answer an earlier question:
Does the company appear to have hired people with my educational background?
The signal does not mean an alumnus will respond or refer you. It helps you decide where to look.
From the job, FrogHire.ai Find Referrers can then search possible contacts and rank relevant recruiting, management, and related roles. The workflow connects company evidence with actual outreach instead of treating alumni as a decorative statistic.
If the company itself has not passed your screen, start with the company research checklist before applying. Alumni access is useful only when the role and employer already deserve your time.
Decide what you want to ask
An alumnus can answer a narrow question more easily than a broad request for “any advice.”
Good questions:
- How does the team divide product analytics and data science work?
- Does this role sit with the New York team or a national function?
- Which part of the interview focused most on stakeholder communication?
- Did your major prepare you for the technical work, or did you add other training?
Weak questions:
- Can you tell me about the company?
- Can you help me get a job?
- Can you refer me?
The weak questions transfer all the work to a stranger.
Write the first alumni message
Use the shared background once. Then move to the relevant work.
Hi Elena, we both studied information systems at Georgia State, and I noticed that you now work in product analytics at Northstar. I am considering the Product Analyst opening on the growth team. Could I ask how much of the role focuses on experimentation versus recurring reporting?
This message gives the alumnus:
- A real connection
- A specific role
- A focused question
- An easy way to answer
It does not pretend that attending the same school creates a close relationship.
When to ask about a referral
Ask only after the person has enough information to judge your fit.
A reasonable transition:
Thank you, that context helps. The role’s experimentation work is close to what I do now, including SQL analysis and test readouts for our subscription funnel. If you feel comfortable, would you be open to looking at my resume and telling me whether an employee referral would make sense?
Give them room to say no. Some employees refer only people they have worked with. Some companies restrict referrals after application. Others may prefer to introduce you to a recruiter.
Use Find Referrers without sending a generic draft
FrogHire.ai Find Referrers can:
- Search contacts from a job and company
- Show available title, company, school, location, and profile information
- Prioritize role-relevant contacts
- Draft an introduction or referral request
- Support attachments and message editing
Edit the draft before sending.
Remove:
- Generic praise about the company
- Claims you cannot support
- Long summaries of your career
- Pressure for an immediate referral
Add:
- The exact role
- One shared detail
- One relevant result from your experience
- One small request
Track the relationship
Record:
- Who you contacted
- Why they were relevant
- When you messaged
- What they told you
- Whether they offered another contact
- Whether a follow-up is appropriate
Use FrogHire.ai Job Manager so the alumni conversation stays attached to the job.
If your next question is recruiter ownership rather than alumni background, read How to Find the Recruiter for a Job Posting on LinkedIn.
If the application is already submitted, switch to the referral after applying workflow and include the requisition ID, application email, and submission date.
