Congratulations! You have made it to that all important final round of interviews — exciting…yet a bit scary! You can rest assured that at this stage, the hiring managers already see you as a strong candidate, but they want to assess your fit, decision-making skills, and long-term potential.
Below are five common final-round interview questions and how to tackle them effectively.
“Why do you want to work here?”
This question tries to understand your motivations for working at this particular company, along with what you know about their ethos. Employers want to see that you have done your research and that your workstyle, values and personality align with the team you will be joining.
How to Answer:
- Mention specific company values, projects, or initiatives that resonate with you
- Think back to projects mentioned in earlier interviews or about the research you have done on the company
- Highlight how your skills and goals align with their needs
- Review the job description and make sure to address what you would bring to the role
“Tell me about a time you faced a major challenge at work and how you handled it.”
This behavioral question assesses problem-solving skills, resilience, and adaptability. If the job you are applying for requires a great deal of teamwork, you might choose an example where you overcame a challenge related to team cohesiveness; if the job you are applying for is more focused on you working independently, perhaps choose an example where you needed to be self-taught and take proactive initiative.
How to Answer (Using the STAR Method):
- Situation: Briefly describe the challenge
- Task: Explain your role in solving the issue
- Action: Detail the steps you took
- Result: Highlight a positive outcome
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”
Employers want to gauge your ambition and whether you envision growth within their company.
How to Answer:
- Express interest in growing with the company
- Are there specific areas that are particularly exciting for you?
- What have you done, or not done, that are areas you would like to hone in this position to help you advance your career?
- Are there roles you think you would like to grow into (be realistic — in five years, would you suddenly become CEO of this company? Over-reaching may not paint you as a candidate with real expectations for growth)
- Highlight skills you hope to develop
- If the company has a history of fostering professional development, highlight this in particular, focusing on the company’s programs that show a commitment to continuous improvement for their employees
“Why should we hire you over other candidates?”
This is your opportunity to sell yourself by emphasizing your unique strengths.
How to Answer:
- Highlight key skills that set you apart from other candidates
- Everyone in the final round likely has skills that you also have (e.g., programming skills) — what have you done with those skills that make you different from others, or a better fit (for example, if it’s a medical company and you have done programming projects/work in STEM, you may choose to highlight that)
- Showcase past achievements with measurable impact
- Quantify, quantify, quantify! Did you increase sales by a certain percentage? Share those numbers or percentages!
“Do you have any questions for us?”
Never say “No” to this question. It’s a final chance to show interest and evaluate if the company is the right fit for you. Do not ask questions that can be readily answered by researching the company online; this is your opportunity to learn what is not written down.
Good Questions to Ask:
- “What are the biggest challenges facing the team right now?” or ““Given my experiences, what do you think might be some of the immediate challenges I would want to address?”
- “Can you tell me about the company’s growth plans over the next few years?”
- “What qualities have made past employees successful in this role?”
TLDR: Preparing for this interview is key. Practice your responses, research the company thoroughly, and be ready to personalize the interview by speaking to their questions with specific examples of your experience and expertise.
